Through our Shelter Publishing project, we give socially disadvantaged groups the opportunity to share their stories with a wide audience in both digital and print form, working with a range of online and print publishers.

Our EPAN project (Education for Protection of Animals and Nature) is still being built up. It aims to encourage the socially disadvantaged groups mentioned above to take part in NGO projects run by nature and animal welfare organizations. In return for their work, participants receive educational vouchers that they can redeem at various educational institutions. While EPAN is aimed primarily at people serving criminal or preventive-detention sentences and former prisoners, it is not limited to this group.

An essential part of our work is also supporting external organizations and projects — for example “Frauen streiken” (“Women Strike”), which advocates for fundamental gender equality, as well as nature and animal welfare organizations, particularly local animal welfare groups and shelters. As an organization funded entirely through private means and receiving no public funding, our support currently has to be limited to our expertise, experience, and labor.

Another cornerstone of our work is giving preference to people aged 45 and over when staffing our projects, in order to open up significantly better opportunities for the long-term unemployed. As part of our “Prisoners Unite Media” project, we produce, among other things, job-application videos and similar materials for this group.

We want to explicitly emphasize that our activities are, in every respect, nonprofit and not oriented toward profit. We only pass on costs when they were incurred on behalf of a client.

Please note, that although this site is in English language, we concentrate on German spoken countries. Mainly Austria, Germany and Switzerland.

Prisoners Unite is the NGO project of the former NGO Inmates Shelter, which now also operates under the name Prisoners Unite. We develop projects for socially disadvantaged marginalized groups, such as people serving criminal or preventive-detention sentences, former prisoners, the long-term unemployed, and, more broadly, anyone who currently has little to no chance in the labor market.

Our flagship project remains the Prisoners Unite rock band, through which we give interested inmates serving criminal or preventive-detention sentences the opportunity to engage creatively. The former project “Shelter Media” has been folded into Prisoners Unite, so Prisoners Unite now covers not only the music itself but also its production and the production of the corresponding videos.
